The importance of Hydration for the Skin
National Hydration Day
National hydration was June 23rd, 2020. It is right behind us, and here is what we learned from it.
National hydration day is there every year to remind us and teach us about the importance of hydration. Drinking water, being careful about the hot weather, etc. Summers can be tough, and without proper hydration, they can be even dangerous.
But what is hydration day also about? Staying hydrated does not only mean “to drink water”. This day is also about the importance of skin hydration.
Skin is the largest organ of the human body and the one that is exposed to weather influences 24/7. Wind, sun, cold, and hot weather, all greatly affect the quality of our skin.
The importance of Hydration for Skincare
The importance of keeping the skin hydrated is so great! With proper hydration, we can prevent many conditions and diseases, such as es eczema, psoriasis, cracked skin, inflammation, irritation, etc. However, these conditions are not the same as dehydrated skin.
People often mix up dry skin and dehydrated skin. While dry skin is a type of skin that we get through genetics, it is not something we can change, only manage. On the other hand, dehydrated skin is a treatable condition that we bring upon ourselves with not getting enough water into our bodies.
Everybody craves beautiful fresh skin that glows, and that can only happen with proper skincare. And we wouldn’t say that importance of hydration for skincare is a big deal, we would say it is crucial.
Hydration is the most important part of every skincare routine.
Why is it important to keep your Skin Hydrated?
Dehydrated skin often ages sooner. If you spot a lot of fine lines on your skin, dehydration may be the cause.
Itching, skin irritation, redness, and unease are all signs that your skin needs more water.
Dull skin, skin without color, circles around the eyes, and overall tired look mean you are not balancing the water intake. You may also notice discoloration or color patches on your skin.
Hydrated skin is extremely important for your overall health. When skin is dehydrated it becomes more sensitive to outside factors. This means it can become more prone to bacteria, inflammation, etc.
Benefits of Keeping Skin Hydrated
The benefits of hydrated skin can be seen both in esthetics and physical appearance, and health.
Hydrated skin benefits include:
- Vital and healthy skin cells
- Prevention and slowdown of fine lines
- Improved elasticity of the skin
- A better system for fighting toxins, and waste
- Stronger ability to fight environmental challenges
How to keep your skin hydrated?
To keep skin hydrated you should:
- Drink more water
- Use hydrating skincare products
- Slow down on caffeine and alcohol
- Eat water-rich foods (fruits and vegetables)
- Wash your body and face with lukewarm water
Hydrating vs Moisturizing
These two terms can sometimes be confusing – hydrating vs. moisturizing, which to choose?
Here is a simple answer. For dry skin, choose moisturizers, and for dehydrated skin - well, hydration.
To know for sure whether you have dry skin or dehydrated skin, the best way is to visit a dermatologist. However, there is a home test for dehydration. Take your fingers and pinch the skin on your face. If you notice little fine lines around the pinch, and if the skin is not jumping back (it is non-elastic), it might mean you have dehydrated skin.
Dry skin is a condition, and for you to know for sure that you have it, you should check with a dermatologist.
Wrong treatments can do a lot of damage.
What is the difference between moisturizing and hydrating?
Moisturizers provide the skin with oils, while hydrating provides skin with water. Moisturizers are often used on dry skin because dry skin lacks oils. But we already said how dry skin is much different than dehydrated skin.
Dehydrated skin lacks water and does not need to be moisturized. Dehydrated skin can actually become oily. The skin can start to produce excess oil to try to compensate for the lack of moisture.
What proteins help the skin maintain hydration elasticity and firmness?
Apricot Kernel oil is an excellent provider of elasticity and firmness to the skin. It helps tone the skin and help you lose those color patches and discoloration areas. It also helps prevent and straighten surface wrinkles and fine lines.
Apricot kernel oil can help you get that glowy appearance wit little to no fine lines!
